About Our School

Athelstan House School is a non-selective, independent pre-preparatory school for boys and girls aged 3-7 years for Richmond Upon Thames and the surrounding area.

For our families and teachers alike, Athelstan House School is a truly special place. That is because it combines the best of both worlds.

There is the closeness and friendliness of a small and nurturing school and we are a school that is big on heart, big on ambition and big on opportunity.

Our size enables pupils to enjoy the freedom of their childhood within a safe and caring environment, while small classes allow all children the chance to discover and develop their talents, whilst receiving maximum individual attention.

Every child matters – wherever their talents, interests and ambitions lie and this is reflected in the ease in which each child enters the next stage of their education.

Elsa Woolf - Head

What Ofsted says:

‘Pupils attain a high standard in reading, spelling and mathematics. They are well prepared for the next stage of their education.’

‘A strong emphasis is placed on pastoral care and the school helps pupils to develop into confident, articulate young people.’

‘The care shown by staff to pupils is of the highest order and results in pupils developing self-esteem and gaining a balanced awareness of the world around them.’

A Fond Farewell

As the school year draws to a close, the year 2 children at Athelstan House School are preparing to say goodbye and set off on their next adventure.

In September the pupils will don new school uniforms and join their new 'family' on the next stage of their journey.

With hearts and minds bursting with enthusiasm, they may take a few tentative steps into their new world, but each and every one of them is more than ready to do so.

It is with great pride that the children leave Athelstan House, well balanced and politely confident, to take up highly sought after places at prestigious independent schools.

As year 2 spread their wings, Mrs Elsa Woolf is preparing for her own expedition. After 37 glorious years at the helm, she is handing over the reigns to current deputy Jill Chatt-Collins, who will continue to lead and inspire.

Elsa is rumoured to have commenced her career, aged 3, leading a group of nursery friends on a walk around central London. Although it wasn't until she had had her 4 children did she turn her hand to teaching. Friends had suggested that she was a born teacher but were told "that's a job for clever people." To the relief of every family that's passed through the doors of Athelstan House, Elsa ignored her own sentiments and has been a trailblazer in pre - prep education ever since.

Appreciating that every child is unique was the defining moment of a school that started its days as a nursery. Provide a solid educational foundation that's fun, interesting and unlocks each child's potential has always been the school's ethos.

In her time as Head she's nurtured children into confident, articulate learners. Welcomed children that were struggling in other environments and gave them wings to fly. Watched youngsters working hand in hand to achieve their goals and loved every minute of it.

Teachers come and go but their memories are forever. The lessons that they teach are forgotten never. Teachers keep changing every now and then. But great ones are remembered time and again.
